Work on You

Getting out of a situation with someone will leave you with a lot of free time that you forgot that you even had. Now that you  finally have all this time on your hands what do you do with it?

Back in 2012 at my first college I was in what most would call a relationship for about 5 months. He consumed most of my time other than my school work. We would spend all our time together. We eventually broke up due to him stepping out of our relationship, and about a month later I started talking to someone else. While I was talking to this new person I reflected on my past relationship and this situation I was in and realized that I did not even know what I wanted. I had to actually sit back and ask myself what exactly was I looking for?

From 2013-2016 I focused mainly on myself. I did talk to a few guys here and there, but I wasn’t trying to dive into a relationship. I focused on school and getting to know myself more. Doing that allowed me to figure out what I wanted out of a relationship. That time allowed me to asses the qualities I wanted in a partner. That time allowed me to mature and see if I was ready to be in a relationship at all. This time allowed me to evaluate my worth. It allowed me to learn not to settle for anything. After taking three years to get myself where I needed to be emotionally and mentally I figured out what I needed from my partner, and also what I needed to give to my partner.

Take some time to work on you, because bouncing around from person to person trying to find what the other person lacked is not going to get you nowhere. You don’t want to be plagued with the constant feeling or thought possibly not being able to find what you’re looking for, or worse settle for what you have now, because you feel that you won’t or can’t do any better. Working on you is really worth it in the long run.

Great post. Similar situation happened to me. I decided to stop dating and having sex with women when I broke up with my last girlfriend. Really got to know who I was. During this period I met a friend who literally was just that, a friend. Well, after about 1 year of being strictly friends we went on a date and have been together ever since. That was 12 years and 4 children ago. Today my wife and I are best friends, as our relationship was built around friendship and not sex. First-time-ever for me. And last…

I’ve been working on myself for thirty years now and I am still a work in progress. You never stop growing and learning new things about yourself. Some really good and some.well not so good things get realized too. Life, it’s a real trip.

    • amiableempath 2 years ago

Life really is a trip. You are very much correct. If you think about it you never really stop working on you, because as you stated above, you’re always learning things things as you go through life.

    Hello ?
I think that throughout life , we keep our eyes on what is going on there and how other people are living . As a result of this , we could miss some points and/or important moments in our own lives. So , i do really agree with you that ?ts time to improve ourselves which lead to better situations, life quality , awareness, emotional intelligence, leadership skills etc. ? thanks for remind and sharing . Best ,

Thank you for commenting. You are so correct. There is nothing wrong with helping others and being there for them, but it should not consume your life.
