Most of us live our lives by focusing on what we have to do. The checklists seem to never end and we ask ourselves if we’ll ever get to where we want to be.
A beneficial way of improving this experience is finding out our personal “why.”
Discovering why we do the things we do allows us to get clear about our values and what is truly important to us.
One way to do this is to make a list of all of the things you love to do. And then, go through each thing and ask yourself why you love it and why it’s important to have in your life. Another thing to ask is how much time do you spend actually doing these things? Do you have the space to do them or do you find that they tend to get pushed back?
If you make a list of all of the other things you are actually doing, you may find that many of them you don’t actually love. You may also find that this list is pretty similar to the first, which is a wonderful and welcome realization. I believe it’s what we should all strive for. It’s too easy to fill up our days with things that aren’t really that important to us.
The key is to start the process of incorporating more of what is important to us and less of what isn’t.
Also, by asking ourselves why, we may even find that the things we originally didn’t enjoy all that much may find their way into our first list because we realize that there is, in fact, importance in them. For example, paying bills isn’t enjoyable at all, but by asking why we may find that it’s important because it allows us to have transportation, a home, running water, etc.
By shifting to viewing our lives through the view of “why,” we begin to step out of the box that is society’s expectation and into our own box that is our personal purpose. We begin enjoying our lives and our to-do lists because they mean something to us.
So today I wonder:
What is your “WHY?”
