I remember many years back when a terrible panic came crashing down on me with no apparent reason. I was so scared, my heart was pounding out of my chest and I couldn’t get enough air that I have to be brought in a nearby hospital. I suffered a nervous breakdown.

The days that followed after the hospitalization was more difficult to bear but I am determined not to take any medications because I am afraid of becoming dependent on it. I read everything I could and realized later that attending to my mental health is crucial to my general well-being and to living a life that is full.

In improving our mental health, it is necessary to understand ourselves first. We need to identify our weaknesses, strength, abilities, feelings and the beliefs we created.  Many of us grow up unaware of who we are, what we like, where we‘re happy at and the likes. We formed our self-concept based on what we hear from our significant others or the people who surrounded us. Most of the distortion we have about our life stem from the reaction we formed based on what other people say.

I grow up believing I was unworthy and doesn’t deserve to be loved. This concept I have about myself was formed after being sexually abused when I was very young. It took a lot of pain in my adult life before I was able to unload the belief I created for myself which was not only demeaning but also devastating. From being unworthy, I changed my belief about myself as a loving child of God, created good for His purpose.

By understanding ourselves we can then move on to accepting who we are which is the next important thing in attaining mental well-being. Some people are naïve to celebrating their strength, abilities, skills and triumphs. They would like to dwell and focus on what they are not, what they cannot do and what they do not have. Feeling sorry for themselves, being envious of others and blaming the people around them become their lot, a sure way to having mental troubles.

When we have an inventory of everything that we have, we can then practice gratitude which is another way to becoming mentally healthy. Research is continually finding that counting our blessings leads to a healthier, happier and less- stressed lifestyle.

Finally, it is vital to find our purpose in life. Misery came from people who never understand why they are here. We may start finding our contribution in this world by joining a community where we can share the abilities and resources we have. Social connection is imperative to our mental health. Doing good deeds for others becomes the seed to which we find greater callings that give meaning to our existence.

Looking inward is the most important first step in finding mental peace. There was a time in my life where I lived in anxiety and mild panic attacks. I had to keep telling myself, “If there is something you can do about the situation then do it. If there is nothing you can do then stop worrying. What will be will be.” I had to learn that I couldn’t control the world around me, but I could control how I reacted to the world. The other thing that I had to learn was honesty with myself. You can look inward all you want, but unless you are honest with your self (no matter how painful it is) it does no good.
