Have you ever had a really great idea that scares you?
It has been my experience that GREAT ideas that are scary are the very thing you should pursue with single-mindedness.
For example, asking that beautiful girl that you are head over heels in love with to marry you or asking your boss for that promotion you are perfect for. Oprah Winfrey was quoted as saying “there are only two emotions, love and fear” and if that is true, clearly fear is the emotion that is holding us back. The way that I have overcome fear is by asking myself three questions:
1. What is the worst that can happen if I try and fail?
2. What is the cost of doing nothing?
3. Will I always wonder what would have happened if I tried?
Right now I am scared of doing live video recordings for my social media accounts. This is a mystery to me because I have spoken publicly in front of audiences as large as 5000 with cameras recording the event.
“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” – T. S. Eliot
This fear is holding me back from achieving better results for my business. Recently I applied to be a guest on one of the top entrepreneur podcasts and it required a 60-second video. I’m glad to say that I conquered my fear, recorded the video, and submitted the application. Will my application be accepted? Maybe yes, maybe no, but the point is I overcame my fear.
Fear is a good thing if it is stopping you from doing something dangerous but it will also stop you from reaching your full potential if you let it. Don’t be reckless but if you have a great idea that will really benefit others then my recommendation is “do what scares you!”
