7 Blogging Misconceptions

You may not notice the things that are holding you back from being a great blogger and you would be quiet surprised as to what they are!

Misconception #7: You Need To Have A Narrowed Down Niche

Think of your blog like yourself, are you just one thing? NO! So why should your blog be? We can like many things such as sports, photography, writing, reading, beauty or fashion all at once so why can’t our blog be like that? Now for some bloggers it may be a bit more important to stay true to the niche, but at the end of the day write what you would like to write about and your readers will read it. Pick a niche for your blog but don’t feel restricted, weekly or monthly it is okay to have a post out of the niche range.

SUCCESS: you need to establish the demographic of your target audience.  Therefore, as long as you are creating and posting content that will interest your intended audience, you will succeed as a blogger or entrepreneur. Remember that the niche does not define you!

Misconception #6: People Will Just Come To Your Blog

Although it would be nice if this were true, sadly it is not. You need to market yourself and your content. By sharing on social media, talking with bloggers and joining different blogging groups. Think of it like the first day at a new school, in order to make friends you have to make the first move and say hello.

Success: for you to get noticed, you need to put in the work and place your content in front of potential readers.  Don’t wait for them to come to you. 

Misconception #5: Quantity Is Key

That is flat out WRONG. Think of your high school english class when your teacher said “quality over quantity” and that is your new blogging mantra! Your readers don’t care if you have 1,000 posts, if they are all half-hearted and poorly written they will not be back for more.

Success: Pick posts you enjoy to write and that you are proud of. If you are not able to post high-quality content everyday, decrease the number of posts you feel you need to write so you have more time to dedicate to each post.

Misconception #4: Blogging Is Simple

As much as I love blogging, it can be quiet the work! You need to take photo’s, plan posts, manage social media, respond to comments. You can never be bored with blogging because there is always something you could be doing to improve your craft. In order for a company to want to work with you, you need to have a significant amount of page views, which takes a good amount of time to build.  Not to mention writers block or blogger burnout, so try not to over work yourself.

Success: if you want to make money with blogging you must be in it for the long haul, it will not work over night which is like anything in life.

Misconception #3: You need to be on every social platform

It’s difficult to stay up to date on every platform and can cause unnecessary stresses. If you are too focused on being present on every social media platform out there, you will never be able to put the amount of quality that each one needs.

Success: Figure out what one’s your readers like or are influenced by. Pick two to mainly focus on and let the rest be, as long as a reader knows you have all the platforms it is up to them to use it.

Misconception # 2: The latest design will help get your blog “out there”

Yes, a good design is helpful but it is not everything. Good design helps with views, email signups, and social shares. The problem is that good design doesn’t do you any good unless people know you exist. If you are not on social media and your content is not well written, the design is not your life boat because if your blog is the titanic I don’t recommend the blogs aesthetic is your route to safety.

Success: Content is key, make sure your writing is strong and you don’t really on the look. Look at it like a first date, he/she may be good looking but if there is nothing in that brain, then it is for sure a one time thing. 

Misconception #1: Other Bloggers Are Competition

This is the BIGGEST lie ever! Other bloggers are your peers, your colleagues and your friends. They can help you learn and grow. Not to mention they understand how much effort it takes. Helping and interacting with other bloggers can help build relationships and grow both blogs by sharing each others work and collaborations. Chances are most of your readers are other bloggers who are also trying to achieve success so help each other out.

Success: Reach out to other bloggers and ask for advice and critiques. Make friends and build relationships because they are the most loyal followers!

    Great post!
    Thank you for clearing all the misconceptions. I am relatively new to blogging but what I have learnt is that there is a place for each and every one of us in this big space called the internet. So why not grow together rather than competing!
