5 Tips to Starting a New Fitness Regime

It is never the wrong or right time to better yourself. It doesn’t have to be the first day of the week, it doesn’t have to be in the morning, and it doesn’t have to be at the start of a new year. It can seem overwhelming if you haven’t been physically active for some time, but anyone can start a new fitness regime, stick to it, and achieve their goals!

Find what you enjoy. It’s no secret that exercising isn’t easy, if it was, we wouldn’t seek advice. It’s about learning to enjoy it because we love the mental and physical benefits. If you already know what you enjoy, great! You’re off to a good start–if you don’t, make a list of things you’d like to try and see how you do. For example, the treadmill will never be my favorite, but I could be on a spin bike all day! Dancing, hiking, jogging, weight lifting–there are no restrictions.

Learn to crawl before you can walk. It’s all about baby steps! There is no reason to jump into something too intense right away. When I first started spinning, I could barely spend 15 minutes on the bike. Now an hour is nothing! Work yourself up and don’t feel discouraged if you can only get in a few minutes.

Add 5 minutes to each day. If on day one you’re walking 10 minutes, by day 5 you’ll be walking 30 minutes. By the end of the month, you might even be walking uphill or hiking! Increase your time according to your body, and before you know it you will be doing things you wouldn’t have thought possible only a short time prior. Adding a little more time every day makes the transition from non-active to daily exercise much easier on the body, and you’re more likely to stick to it.

Don’t leave your house. Isn’t this one wonderful? You can improve your fitness in your own home, even if you don’t have machines! If you can’t make it to the gym or outdoors, find something to do at home instead. Don’t let bad weather, lack of transportation, or expenses keep you from getting active! Maybe you enjoy dancing, pilates or yoga, or create your own routine that might include jumping jacks, pushups, burpees, leg lifts, crunches, squats, etc. Walk up and down a flight of stairs, walk laps. If you’re reading this, chances are you have access to YouTube; why not look up some at home fitness routines to follow?

Have attached goals. Make sure you’ve attached goals to it. This is the most important one! Whether you are just looking to tone something or you are training for a marathon, make sure you keep some kind of ultimate goal in mind. “By this time next year,  I want to run a 5k.” “I want to be able to carry the laundry up the stairs.” “I want to feel great at the beach this Summer.” “I want to lower my blood pressure.” It doesn’t matter what you are looking for, as long as you are working towards something greater; it makes sticking to a regime easier and more enjoyable. Remember, exercising because you want to be healthy and in shape is a goal, just make sure you find a way to stay motivated!

I wish you all the best, thanks for reading!

May we all achieve our goals!
