As I was reflecting on the topic of this blog post, I couldn’t help but recall the words of the Wizard of Oz as he addressed the Cowardly Lion: “You, my friend, are a victim of disorganized thinking!” It’s amazing how many insights and nuggets of wisdom, like that, can be mined from this classic and timeless movie.

The phrase “disorganized thinking” covers a lot of territory, but when you’re a victim of it, it takes the wind out of your sails, weakens your motivation, and undermines your chances for success in just about any endeavor.

Disorganized thinking can assume a lot of different forms, but when you’re aware and actively looking for it, it’s not that hard to spot. And once you identify and label it, it’s a lot easier to neutralize it and shift your attention to your strengths, limitless potential, and abundant opportunity which surrounds you.

Below is one of the most common examples of disorganized thinking. Have you ever said these words –either silently or out loud?

“The last time I tried this, I failed, so why should I set myself up for failure and try again?” Analysis of this absurd statement: At one time or another, we’ve all said this to ourselves, but when you examine these words, they are totally illogical and self defeating. Here’s why: Some of the most massively successful entrepreneurs, writers, scientists, and entertainers in the world have failed dozens of times, if not more, before finally achieving a breakthrough which changed their lives — and often the lives of others.

One of my favorite motivational sayings, which my father shared with me decades ago, is this: “Persistence breaks down resistance.” It’s a great mantra! Simple, but powerful! Adopt it and it will help you overcome discouragement, self sabotage, and fear of rejection and failure.

Resistance can be both internal and external, but — in both cases — it changes and shifts from one moment to another. It’s fluid. Sometimes it just disappears entirely! So, just because you failed or were rejected yesterday or 10 years ago does NOT mean you’ll experience the same outcome now. Conditions change…YOU change — especially if you work at it.

Here is a revealing question that is worth asking yourself every day: “What would I attempt to do and how would I act if I KNEW I could not fail?” Imagining the answer to that question will help give you the momentum, confidence, faith, and self belief you need to win in life.

Whether you want to start a business, write a book, become a recording artist, climb the company ladder, get an MBA, or ask someone out on a date (or to marry you), it’s absolutely necessary to believe in yourself, stay focused, and be willing to risk failure.

Failure is temporary; quitting can be permanent.

It’s interesting to see where other people get their inspiration to write. Old movies, your father, etc… Since I started blogging, I have been coming up with all sorts of things and have realized that a lot of my influences are from the past. Some are more recent, but they are all true. Thanks for your article! I really enjoyed it.

I really appreciated this motivational saying “Persistence breaks down resistance”. When you start to make changes you encounter a lot of resistance, also coming from yourself. The path to confidence is not instantaneous but it comes with time and by having some mantras that you need to repeat over and over. Thank you for this post 🙂

Nice post. Sometimes I let my brain overthink things, which in turn makes me feel like a disorganized thinker second guessing myself. Must have something to do with I sold my business last year and am trying to find myself…second guessing the direction I’m taking. Thank you for your post. I will let it sink in😊
