Eye Contact

The ability to make eye contact with someone as they speak is the most powerful tool we can have.  The ability not to break our gaze and give someone our complete attention is a true show of respect.  Yet, believe it or not, looking others in the eye can be a struggle for some.

Have you had an experience while talking with someone and they never look you in the eye? Or they meet your gaze a couple of times and then glance away appearing disinterested in what you are saying. It may be they’re not disinterested but shy or nervous.

That steady gaze is a sign we are paying attention.  Can you imagine how the receiver must feel when our eyes drift off in another direction, whether casing the room or checking our phone?!  I personally feel a total disconnect from that person, don’t you?

Increased eye contact makes us more appealing and approachable.  It improves interaction, as it creates a bond between ourselves and our receiver(s).   Our thoughts and emotions appear to be more honest and sincere if we look directly into someone’s eyes while communicating.

Besides, those making steady eye contact seem more powerful and more dominant; and emotionally stable, as well.

“No one can lie, no one can hide anything, when he looks directly into someone’s eyes.” – Paul Coelho

To become connected and in-sync, show attention and respect; display honesty and sincerity; share thoughts and emotions. Eye contact is the most powerful form of nonverbal communicating.

The quality of face to face interaction is number one in networking with others; interviewing, and most important making a speech.

How are you going to face your enemies if you can’t look them in the eye!

Eye to eye, I’m not shy

Eye to eye, I’m no spy

Eye to eye, I’m your guy

Eye to eye, I’ve nothing to hide

Eye to eye, I can’t tell a lie

    Thank you for sharing this.

This is such an essential topic in this day and age. Communication is key, and it is very much defined by eye contact because not only is that a sign of attentiveness, but it also acknowledges the other person.

Very interesting post! I look forward to reading more posts from you!

I focus on the person’s eyes, while we are in a discussion. I notice the color of their eyes, which usually helps me maintain my focus.
