1. It lets you get the feelings out without having to get anyone else involved. Let’s face it; getting emotional in front of people is always an embarrassing process, no matter how close you are to the person. And then there’s the post-cry awkwardness you have to deal with later. At least you can be 100% certain that your notebook isn’t going to judge you.
2. It’s free. It’s cathartic. It’s emotionally healing and it costs exactly £0 which means you’ll still have money at the end of the month to buy yourself that £80 coat you saw on your retail therapy trip.
3. It’s productive. There’s nothing to make you feel better about yourself when you’re down than doing something with a purpose. It gives you a sense of satisfaction, boosts your self confidence and motivates you. Sure, maybe it’s just sad word babble now, but you could easily turn those feels into relatable poetry that a magazine or two might want to publish.
4. It helps you reevaluate your situation. Writing things down gives you the chance to stop and reflect on your problems, see them from a new perspective, and put them into context.
5. It allows you to process difficult emotions. Sometimes when emotions are too strong for us to handle we block them out because it’s easier to pretend they don’t exist, or we numb ourselves to them so they can’t break us down. But this isn’t a long term solution. Emotions demand to be felt; bottling things up can lead to depression, anxiety and other mental health illnesses. When we write we allow ourselves to feel those emotions and therefore process them in a healthy, natural way.
6. It gives creative and meaningful expression to our deepest fears and thoughts. Even if no one else reads what we’ve written, it somehow validates what we’ve been through, it validates our identities as humans and it validates the experiences that have made us who we are.
While writing is no replacement for real therapeutic intervention and/or medications, it is an extremely useful self-help technique that is often used by therapists to help their patients work through trauma. There have been many studies citing the usefulness of therapeutic writing and the physical/emotional health benefits it brings.

Pure catharsis.Well written. Thank you!
you’re welcome 🙂
This is so absolutely true, as I live writing!!
*love
When I was younger I went to a psychiatrist for some issues I was having in fifth grade. The best advice I got from her was to write my thoughts down so I could get them out! I really feel it was essential for coping and getting through my father’s death a few years later.
I was actually reflecting on the importance of writing for soldiers as I was watching 13 Hours last night. It is so therapeutic and I know what they go through is difficult to talk about. I would think journal
ling would be so vital for something like that.
Thanks for your thoughts!
I’m definitely taking notes. You all write so well. Great Post!
writing is absolutely the best therapy!
It’s theraputic to me and I get to let my thoughts flow. The best medicine hands down.
True?
I thought that writing engages and fertilizes the mind.
Yup, well said.. Writing is like a therapy
I loved journaling as a kid and found it therapeutic gathering my emotions and writing it down on paper. This is one of the reasons why I started blogging to record my journey and growth. It’s a great way to look back at a life well lived.
This is so true ? well written.
Pure facts!!!

I 100% agree with all the points mentioned. Writing makes you feel like a better person inside and out.
I think another benefit to writing is that it improves your ability to focus and express your thoughts! If you write often enough, it will begin to show in your speaking skills as well!
Agree with this post 100%. Writing is my therapy!
AMEN! To all the above. When I can’t make life make sense I write it all out. Often clarity comes- but even when it doesn’t the writing seems to the weight off my chest and out of my mind.
Soooo nice and so true! Totally agree! Superb post
This is so true.
Great article!
I kid you not, post today had a similar theme. Great job!
Soooooo true
Every word here is true.
Writing helps you shed your inhibitions. Also anything written down makes your thoughts clearer and more significant. I completely agree that it helps us deal with our deepest fears. I also think after a point it makes us much more comfortable in our own skin.It makes us more compliant and more accepting of your shortcomings.
Its a way of releasing the negative ions in our body. Through writing, we express our experiences in nice way thus creates a new whole you.
Great points 🙂 A massive stress relief that should be encouraged more!
If I couldn’t write our my feelings, I would suffer under the weight of my own consciousness.
Great Article!
Thanks for this! Number five was especially helpful and insightful for me.
Writing poetry keeps my Sanity I 100% agree
Thank you for posting. This is so true.
This is so true. Writing is healing and both productive. Thanks for sharing!
I couldn’t agree more. I remember seeing a documentary several years ago, about teens going through mental health issues. One girl said that when things get too much for her, she writes. I know that for me, travelling and writing keeps me sane.
So very true. I have always liked writing but after I lost my amazing Dad to cancer in December 2015 I started to write on an almost daily basis. I have just started sharing my poetry more this past year. I now have a poetry blog here on WordPress in case you have time to look? Wishing you a good day, Sam 🙂

Couldn’t agree more! Writing is the best therapy of all! ??
I couldn’t agree more! There have been many times when life, fate, or the universe has slapped me down. Through writing, though I am always able to pull myself back up, ready for the next blow.
It ‘s an incredible way to flush bad or negative emotions from your mind and I often think that by writing down feelings and emotions, you are better able to understand them. At least I am anyway. I really enjoyed reading this post, thanks!
I so agree!! Totally correct!
I totally agree. Reading and writing helps me deal with mental stress
Absolutely. I just so feel so happy when I let go of emotions and feelings which are really true to me. Writing helps me to bring things to light and help other people. Speaking up the truth will always make good things happen.
I totally agree. Whenever I’m angry, annoyed, sad, I need to write.
