They stand together, tall and green
But one looks over them all
From his branches can be seen
The vast and treacherous sprawl.
The creeks slither far below
On ancient weathered stone
The saplings have begun to grow
Towards the great kings throne
To his limbs the droplets cling
Like ornaments of glass
At his roots cicadas sing,
A loud melodic rasp.
Decades old he stands,
Housing crows and sparrows,
Who nestle in his feet and hands
His thick trunk slowly narrows.
He has felt the icy rain
His trunk is charcoal black
Each new day is constant pain
He knows he can’t go back.
A cruel wind sneers and fights
But the mighty tree stays tall
Strong as man and dark as night,
Today it will not fall.
