It’s Not the Best Thing About You

For one reason or another, I’ve had contact with a LOT of people in the “motivation” industry. Some have been very good at what they did, with a level of perception that went beyond mere psychology.

Others…not so much.

The not-so-great ones always did the same thing – they’d ask you to “name the best thing about yourself.”

That’s pointless – it doesn’t get you anywhere. A shot of the warm fuzzies that’s gone as suddenly as it came.

The question shouldn’t be “What is the best thing about you?”, like you’re already complete and unchangeable. It should be “What do you want to be the best thing about you?” Or, as one person I know who wasn’t in the motivational industry, but probably should have been, phrased it, “What do you want them to write in your obituary?”

Because you’re not complete – you’re not finished yet. You’re a work in progress, and a single brush stroke could change everything.

What’s the best thing about me? My eyes.

What do I want to be the best thing about me? My knowledge and experience in the areas and sectors I’m passionate about.

What about you? What do you want to be the best thing about you?

Because that unfinished desire tells you what to work towards. It tells you where to focus your attention. It tells you what your next brush stroke needs to be in order for a “good” painting to become a “great” painting – in order for something “great” to become “a masterpiece.”
