Stop. Wait just a minute. What the heck just happened?  In just 24 short hours, your weight fluctuated a whole 6 pounds and all you did was sleep.  Is this your imagination?  Surely your scale had a full blown breakdown over night.

The female flux is a real explanation. Contrary to what your husband or boyfriend believes, you are not crazy. It’s not just in your pretty little head.  Unfortunately the female weight fluctuation can swing anywhere from 5-7 pounds on any given day. One minute you’re feeling all kinds of “relatively slim” and poof…the next minute your brimming with bloat.   What the heck?

Don’t fret baby girl because it happens to the best of us. For some women it may be a ritualistic day to day, week to week or month to month battle. Guess what, you can fight back and lower the swing range by several pounds.

Water weight is the culprit.  Here are a few token solutions to drop into your tank and shrink the water monster.

First, track your period. Seriously, your time of the month can play a significant role in on your waistline. I use “Period Tracker” which is a free app and it works great. It is super simple to use and best of all…you can monitor your moods… check out →You can’t flow it down. (a blog post on Abercrombie and FITness)

If you are on the pill or have an IUD, you should still monitor your period and symptoms. This is valuable information because it’s highly possible that you’re more susceptible to severe water weight before or during your cycle. Dare I say pre-menopause?

I often use Dandelion Root as a dietary supplement before my period begins. This all natural capsule helps me naturally shed excess water before it begins. Dandelion is an organic root that when taken orally, promotes water depletion from your cells. I prefer to take it during the day because I don’t want to be up and down during the night. These suckers draw the water out of your body and the only side effect is numerous trips to the ladies room.

A secondary plan is to eat water rich foods such as celery, watermelon, cucumber and asparagus. These vegetables are natural diuretics. Eating these foods before or during your monthly cycle will help drain excess water from the body.

Some fiber rich foods can actually cause you to retain water and bloat. So it’s good to stay away from these types of foods if you already retain water during your period.

Fiber rich foods such as broccoli, squash and rice can actually cause water retention and bloating. So my advice is to stay away from these types of foods if you know that your time of the month is approaching.

Weekend warriors may experience the familiar Monday puff. You know, that feeling of overall intolerant puffiness from eating yucky processed foods and drinking alcohol all weekend. It happens because most likely you didn’t hydrate and drink enough water in between the bad salty “cheat” meals. You know the rule beautiful, a glass of water for every alcoholic beverage you drink.

Which brings me to my last and final point. Ladies, you have got to drink water and by water I mean more than 8 ounces a day. Sweetie, 8 little ounces is not enough. You have got to guzzle like the college days. I know you still have it in you. You can do it, I know you can. Water is the key component to flush food and toxins through your system. A bottle of water is not going to do the trick. Flavor your water with lemon, lime, mint orange or cucumber. These acidic fruits offer a small diuretic which can also be helpful.

I’m empathetic to the female flux.  How do you battle the bloat? Any tips and tricks to share?

Love, peace and enjoy the release!

  1. Not at all 😊 Well if you want a bit of shameless advertising give me a shout on FB and add me here. I’m hoping to expand my blog in the coming weeks to encompass both genders. I’m only starting out here but I post regularly to FB and I have a motivation account on Instagram. Everyone needs a little encouragement from time to time, but it’s really only awakening what you know yourself to be true already!

      1. You’re very welcome. That’s exactly what people need to hear. Especially women because we live in such a distorted reality with the media and Instagram. It’s great to see a woman being honest and telling it how it actually is. Keep up the good work.

  2. Wow! I was shaking my head vigorously in the beginning when you were talking about how one minute we feel slim and there next we feel so bloated. I thought this was just me, but glad that it’s something many experience but best of all, is fixable! Thanks for sharing!
