How do you recover when the last employers trash you? On the next job, if it is like mine, in education, you tell the truth! Nothing positive can come from lying. Thus, I told the truth.

I was stressed, the deceptive actions of my principal was affecting my health, which affected my performance and I resigned.

Unfortunately, that left my principal able to put what ever he wanted in my exit forms. He put that I violated school policies and procedures. The new school board HR director, took that as if I committed a crime. Of course, I didn’t! I do not and have never had a record! The old principal was retaliating against me for leaving before he could try to fire me.

Peter, (old principal) and I fought all the time. Any gossip he heard about a teacher, whether true or not, he would bring those teachers in for a just cause hearing. A just cause hearing is a hearing, where the employer gets a chance to make the employee feel like a criminal. You meet your union representatives and it’s a shit show! If you had an argument with a teacher about the damn lightbulbs, you could get a just cause meeting.
A case in point: a child accused me of racism. The crazy part was that we are both the same race. Nevertheless, Peter sent me a letter for a just cause hearing to discuss accusations brought against me. Peter asked the kid what did I say that was racists? The kid responded, “in my mind, I feel she doesn’t like me cause of my skin color.”

The child was not emotionally well, we all knew this. Unfortunately, Peter, wanting me out so bad, he didn’t care. The only thing that saved me was my special education supervisor, Mr. Kennedy. Kennedy knew the kid, and defended my character. That was one of many stories I remember during my eight years teaching at that school.

The new school, after hearing my side and calling my references, didn’t fall for the lies Peter wrote, thank God! I have supervisors and colleagues who vouched for my record and stood up for me. At the end of the day, it’s finally over! I never have to work with Peter again. A new chapter can finally begin for me.

  1. Always tell the truth
  2. Admit to whatever actions you have done.
  3. Be honest, it goes a long way.
  4. It shows your new employment, you are honest and trust worthy!
  5. Be humble

In closing, a new chapter is possible in every station in your life. Dream Big, Pray Always!

That never happened to me after meeting with the administration because of this teacher that made up a whole bunch of lies. Since I was only an assistant teacher, I felt like I didn’t count and the administrators only believe old timers. I’m glad it worked out for you.
