When we have a problem and feel as though our life is falling apart, our tendency is to “escape” from the miserable state that we’re at- and most often than not, we resolve to the quick fixes that are also self-destructive at some point: We drink. We party like hell in the company of people who more or less do not care about what’s going on with your life. We take drugs to forget or have sex with strangers. But guess what– the next day, YOUR PROBLEM IS STILL THERE because these quick fix are not really the solutions but a temporary escape from your reality.

Just recently, I was able to listen attentively to Jason Mraz’ song “Three Things” and I thought, Wow! This is exactly how we should deal with the downsides in our lives.

“Number one, I cry my eyes out and dry up my heart.”

Yes, crying is a cathartic release. It purges us of our massive feeling of loneliness. I personally believe that it is important to first empty ourselves with the heartaches before we could move on.

“The second thing I do… say my thank-you’s for each and every moment of my life. I go where I know the love is and let it fill me up inside…”

Not many of us realize but it is also important to contemplate on our lives. We get to analyze what went well and what went wrong…being said that, we should not fix our focus only the to the bad experience and the bad feeling that it brings- but more importantly, what lesson do we get from it.

Surrounding ourselves with the people who cares for us also helps us get through the difficulties of life. If we are alone and we are lonely, we get lonelier because we do not have another person to encourage us and share the burden. Other people may not necessarily provide the solutions, but they give us the emotional support that is much needed. They strengthen us by letting us feel loved and valued.

“The third thing that I do…I pause, I take a breath,…and I let that chapter end.”

We should let go of the failures and hurts in our past, and move on with our lives. Contrary to what others believe in, your past do not determine your future. You future is determined by the choices that you make…and it is your choice to be happy. SO CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY.

  1. Well there’s this simple method which I do when I’m lonely I talk to God. I talk to Jesus whos is Christos . And trust me friend! That is amazing. And you can talk with him too! Just pray for praying in silent place frim heart means tslking with him wholeheartedly!

  2. Love that last sentence! I always try to stay happy even in my worst times! It can be hard sometimes but you know what? It DOES get better. We all just have to keep going so one day we can show something AWESOME! Like crafting a book for example as I would say it.

    1. It does get better always, right? It really helps when you have a more positive outlook. I like what you say about keep going and make something awesome! Thank you for sharing your insights! ?

  3. Hi Nina,
Good post. I really relatedtowhat you said about us spending too much time and doing crazy things..”in the company of people who more or less do not care about what’s going on with your life.”
I woke up to this a few years ago and realised I was actually wasting my life with those that didn’t really care for me at all. I thought we had something strong in common, like a bond or something…and then realised it really was only drinks or partying. Take those things away and we weren’t even friends, just drinking buddies.
Thanks for this very insightful message.
    Regards, Marie.

    1. Hello Marieyan! I’m sorry to hear about your past experience. It’s good that you came to the realization that you were only wasting your time and life with them. It’s never too late to be in control of your life. I wish you only the best in your journey and growth.

      Warm regards,
      Nina

  4. I would have added somewhere that we should take all of our cares to the Lord Jesus. When we do this, we admit our powerlessness over the situation and give him an opportunity to show his strength in our life. Then we become a light for others. It has truly worked in my life. I have tips in an article I wrote on “fear”. Please give a read and consider following. https://bossinthemiddle.com/2016/11/16/midweek-pump-people-that-are-afraid-should-read-the-human-instruction-manual/

    1. That is so true! I think that’s what the song is conveying too on the last step “I bow and close my eyes” as if to pray…nonetheless, it is very good addition. When my world seems in chaos, I always find inner peace when I pray. ?

    1. Hi Shami! Yes, crying is a great catharsis for burdensome emotions. It is also wise to self-reflect and analyze our feelings so we know how to deal with it better. Thank you for reading and for commenting.

  5. I was just thinking about loneliness today. I am so busy and surrounded by people but when I slow down I suddenly realise that I’m actually feeling very lonely. I think your point about slowing down and taking a breath is very true. I often don’t let that happen and so I tend to not feel content and at peace often and all I can think of in those moments is that I’m lonely. I wonder whether it’s because I’m missing my own company.

    1. I guess you need to have some time alone and evaluate yourself to identify which area of your life is making you feel lonely…and then you could start working on it! ?

  6. I used to try to run/ignore/sweep-under-the-rug rather than really face the pain.
    It didn’t work.
It was when i finally allowed myself to look into the truth of the hurt that I could learn to heal.
    Thanks for this!
