Wine Not? How to Pair Wine with Food (1 min read)

Before you read any further, pour yourself a glass of wine. What is wine? It’s an alcoholic beverage made from the fermented juice of freshly picked grapes. In other words, it’s a really yummy adult juice! Although at times we just want to have a glass or two of wine to unwind, it’s also great to know which wines pair well with food – you know, for those days you’re hosting or when you want a fancy dinner for yourself. Here are a few tips on how to go about it.

White Wine 

As most of you would know, white wine pairs very well with white meat such as chicken, seafood and pork. The different types? Here are some:

  • Chenin Blanc – This is a fresh and fruity wine. It’s complimentary to dishes like roast turkey, most seafood, roast pork and tuna. 
  • Sauvignon Blanc – It’s quite a dry wine, with a zesty, refreshing feel to it. Goes well with seafood, mushrooms, asparagus and cheese dishes.
  • Chardonnay – Another fruity wine but fills your mouth with a peach flavour. Pairs well with seafood across the board.
  • Gewürztraminer – This is a spicy wine with a bit of a flowery taste. Pair it with curries and other spicy food.


Red Wine 

Red wine mainly pairs well with red meat dishes. The following are some red wines:

  • Cabernet Sauvignon – Berry flavoured and has a similar taste as strong black tea. Goes well with all red meats, game birds and blue cheese.
  • Merlot – This tastes like plums and chocolate, yum! Indulge with duck, ostrich or chocolate cake.
  • Pinot Noir – Cherries and cranberries flowing around your mouth. Also goes well with duck, mushrooms and liver. (For those of you that don’t like a lot of meat, you can skip the liver!)
  • Shiraz – Quite rough on the palate with a smoky, peppery taste. Pair it with lamb chops, roast beef and roast chicken to enjoy the wine even further.

These are not the only wines in the world, I have left out a lot of other wines. These are just some of the popular wines, which should help you getting an idea of how to go about pairing wine with food. Now, let’s get to drinking, shall we?
