We all have our very own individual concerns about ourselves that are different from other people’s concerns they may have about themselves. For some people, these concerns may entail characteristics such as weight, height, hair, skin concerns (i.e. acne, scars, wrinkles, dark circles, etc.), or maybe even internal characteristics such as insecurity, depression, anxiety, or many many other possible concerns. What do you do when you have a concern about something? Do you just sit there and let it affect you and your life, or do you take control of your own life and aim to make a change and diminish your concerns?
Take, for example, weight gain. Lets say the holiday season treated you really nice (I’m talking REALLY nice…you finished off all of the pumpkin pie, turkey, sweet potato casserole, stuffing, mashed potatoes, Aunt D’s apple crisp, and then still had room for pumpkin rolls after. This was totally me guys.), you gained a little weight, and now all you can concentrate on is how much you gained and how much better you looked before the holidays made you go bad s***t crazy, and all of a sudden act is if you hadn’t eaten since last Christmas. Are you going to sit there and create more problems for yourself (depression, anxiety, insecurity, loss of self-confidence), or are you going to reach out and grab back the reins of your life? Make attempts at eating healthier (maybe only two slices of pizza now instead of five type of deal), become more active, attain a gym membership…which one would you do?
I am not a fitness person whatsoever, so my goal here is not to persuade you into going to the gym today, drink eight glasses of water, or cut back on carbohydrates today. I know I am certainly not doing those things! My own personal concern is actually my skin. I struggle with blackheads, enlarged pores, oily complexion, redness, acne scaring, dark circles, and then whatever decides to show up on my face today (it is something new daily, I swear. Please tell me I am not the only one??). Instead of letting my concerns bother me everyday and just aim to temporarily cover them all up with pounds of foundation and makeup, I take charge. I take charge and conduct my research and try out every product out there to target my concerns in hopes of diminishing them. The only way they are going to diminish and I am going to reduce my concerns about them is if I treat them. You would take care of your body if you were concerned with weight gain, so why not take control of your skin as well? Your skin is so so important and can completely change your overall appearance. Try it out and see how much better you will feel with clear, radiant, even toned skin. And guys, this isn’t just for the ladies! This applies to you men as well:)
So, how do you properly take care of your skin to achieve the skin you want? It all starts with knowing yourself and your individual concerns. For some people, acne will be their only concern and for others, their main concerns may be more challenging to diminish such as fine line and wrinkles. For me, I have really bad dark under eye circles that much just be hereditary, because they are going absolutely nowhere fast…ugh! I have tried so many products out there and my dark circles are still as noticeable as ever.
After knowing what your specific skin concerns are, it is time to put some effort into taking the most optimal care of it and loving your skin. What do I mean by this? I mean, your skin isn’t going to heal itself overnight, it is going to take patience, some motivation, and even some money. But I promise you, it will be SO worth it in the long run. This means washing your face twice a day. One rule of thumb…NEVER go to sleep with your makeup still on!! I get it, after a long, tiring day, the last thing you want to do before hitting the hay (do people still use this saying?) is wash your face. I am so guilty of this too! But listen to this, there was actually an experiment conducted by the Daily Mail in 2013 in which a women didn’t wash her face for 30 days straight and literally aged herself by 10 whole years!!! Now, that is a little extreme, but you get my point! You can age yourself so much by not washing your face. This can lead to eye irritation and infection, wrinkles, breakouts, dry skin, clogged pores, and so much more! Think about all of this the next time you try to go to bed without washing your face.
A few years back, when I was really struggling with acne, I invested in a Clarisonic Mia 2 cleansing brush, and it has completely changed my life! This brush gets every spec of dirt off of my face and leaves my face feeling so smooth and clean. After going from using only wash cloths to this brush, the difference was so amazing!! I can’t live without my brush now. I highly recommend purchasing some kind of facial cleansing brush to really get your face as clean as possible. When using just your hands, or even a wash cloth, so much dirt is still left on your face. Try out this brush and you will see what I mean!
What was the real staple in my routine for getting rid of my acne though was Murad’s entire acne line. Have you heard of Murad yet? They are a bit pricey, but so worth it!! After using their products for over a year and a half now, I can understand why their products are so expensive. They actually work and diminish so many of my concerns! If you are willing to throw money for cheap skin care products that in all actuality aren’t going to do anything for you concerns, why not put all of the money that you would spend on those products together and put it all into a brand and line of products that actually will work? They even have travel sizes, so you can try out smaller bottles of their products for much less to determine if you love their products too or not. When I first became hooked on Murad products, it was after purchasing this Advanced Breakout Control 20 Day Acne Kit of just $29.95!! So affordable, and their products really last you a long time since you don’t need to go crazy with the amount you apply to your face.

I don’t want to provide them with too much of the spotlight of my post, I just really can’t say enough great things about their products and how well they have diminished my skin concerns and have made my face clear, more radiant, and evened out my skin tone.
I used to be the type of girl who would turn to makeup to “hide” my concerns. I never wanted to spend money on skin care products (because I never really understood them and they cost an arm, a leg, and my head of hair). I also never wanted anyone to ever see me without makeup on because I didn’t want them to see all the flaws. I figured, if I go to bed with my makeup on and hurry up and wash my face in the morning and quickly apply more makeup, no one will ever see my “naked” face and realize how many imperfections I have. Anybody else know Britt from “The Bachelor?” Yeah, that was totally me a few years ago before I really started taking care of my skin. I remember waking up one particular morning with about five new white heads, blackheads clear as day, and my right eye was swollen shut. My eye had become so infected from my mascara being left on all night, I was so embarrassed. I didn’t leave my house for nearly three days straight. That was my turning point. That was the point in which I decided I had to stop being so lazy and I needed to start taking MUCH better care of my skin. I will never turn back now.
I know it may be easier right now to just cover up any blemishes or insecurities on your face however, it is crucial to first love the skin you are in and realize that it is OK to go some time without makeup on your face. Let yourself become vulnerable. It is OK to let your guard down and let others see the real you. You need to first become comfortable with people seeing you without makeup on to allow your skin time to breath and heal without all of the makeup. This was the hardest thing for me. You will start to realize though that as you are doing this, your skin is healing and your concerns are diminishing, and you will become more and more confident with your skin everyday as you take the most optimal care of it. You will notice your skin clear up, dark spots fade, wrinkles diminish. You will become so confident in your skin that you won’t think twice about running to the store quick with no makeup on. You won’t feel the need to hide your skin or cover up your skin with so much makeup. You won’t shy away from swimming pools, rain, or anything that may “wash off” your makeup and expose your natural skin. You will become so much more confident in not only your skin, but yourself as well! You have such gorgeous skin, with or without any imperfections. When you take care of your skin, you don’t just get better looking skin, you get yourself back. You get your confidence back and your ability to be “you” and not have to put on a front for others and hide yourself under makeup.
Makeup is a great thing yes, but we have to first love the skin we are in, and that starts with properly taking care of our skin. Wash you face twice a day, apply products that target your concerns, invest money and time into your skin care routine. I promise you, it will be so worth it in the long run.
