Gautama Buddha, or simply the Buddha was an ascetic and sage, on whose teachings Buddhism was founded. He is believed to have lived and taught mostly in the eastern part of ancient India sometime between the sixth and fourth centuries BCE.

Born: 563 BCE –  Lumbini, Nepal

Died: 400 BCE (aged 80) – Kushinagar, India

1. You will not be punished for your anger, you will be punished by your anger.

2. Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.

3. Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.

4. No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path.

5. Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.

6. Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.

7. You, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.

8. We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.

9. Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.

1o. The mind is everything. What you think you become.

These are lovely quotes and I enjoyed them, but the Buddha is not recorded as saying some of these things.

Number 2 and number 6 are very similar to words in the suttas, number 7 is a Salzburg quote, but still similar to a message in the Udana, number 3 was said by buddhaghosa, not Buddha (but still very much in line with teachings), and number 4 is a mostly accurate translation of something in the dhammapada.

However, number 1 originated somewhere in the 90s, number 8 isn’t Buddha (seems like a bad misunderstanding of something in the dhammpada) – same for 10 which is similar, and number 9 isn’t something the Buddha said, it originated in the 1900s.

Number 5 is a poor paraphrasing from something in the ‘Book of Threes’.

Sorry to be a spoilsport! But to Buddhists this is a bit like how Christians might feel about attributing incorrect things to Jesus. Over time, and with such large amounts of sharing as the internet allows, it could damage the real message.

I still enjoyed the quotes, and some of them the Buddha might have agreed with! I don’t know! But we should not attribute them to him incorrectly. Here’s a relevant Buddha Quote:

“Monks, these two things are slanderous to the Buddha. Which two? When someone claims I have said things that I have not said. And when someone claims I have not said things that I have said. These are the two things that slander the Buddha.”
